My friend, First Lady Laura Bush

If I’m ever lost in the woods, Laura is the one I want with me. She’s the kind who can read a compass, identify the edible berries, craft a Jeep Cherokee out of a piece of driftwood, and have us on our way before nightfall. I’ve always known she’s there if I need her, and I hope she knows that about me.

She and our little band of movers and shakers hit the ground running back in 1982 and wrote about it later in her memoir, Spoken From the Heart. Twenty-five years later, she came to visit me while I was serving as US ambassador to Hungary. Read more about our friendship and about the early days of SGK in Promise Me.
